What is the purpose of Saturday's session?
To challenge NC TEACHers to think through some of the possible emergency or crisis situations they might confront at school so that if/when an emergency or crisis does occur, they are more prepared to make a decisions that are best for the well-being and safety of themselves and their students.
What will be expected of us on Saturday?
We will be open and active participants in Saturday’s session. We will examine what we know about schools, safety, and the typical school day, and will allow ourselves to feel a little uncomfortable. No matter how well we plan lessons, organize classrooms, or write procedures, there are always circumstances out of our control. However, we can control how we react to those circumstances.
Guiding Questions:
What are the responsibilities of the teacher in regards to school safety?
What prevention measures can be taken to curtail school violence?
How does Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs help inform our understanding of a student's potential for violence within a school?
Why does violence occur in our schools?
Why do students join gangs? What do teachers need to know about gangs in order to maintain a safe classroom environment?
